As the year comes to an end, we wanted to round up our favorite five hikes of 2023. These were some of our favorite hikes for a variety of reasons, stunning views, mixed terrain and fun challenges along the way. Glaciers, mountains, lakes and waterfalls are all highlights of the hikes in this round up. It was an incredible year of hiking for us. How about you?

Our five favorite hikes of 2023 are from all over British Columbia and Alberta. Maybe we will stretch our legs further afield in 2024 but for now there are so many amazing hikes to do right here!

Our Five Favorite Hikes Of 2023

1) Parker Ridge

It was hard to pick our favorite hike of 2023 but the number one spot went to Parker Ridge. This oh so popular day hike is located on the Icefields Parkway, which runs between Banff and Jasper.

This scenic hike is basically a steep but short hike up to the saddle of the ridge. When you get there, the views are incredible, looking down the valley towards a glacier. From here you can extend your hike if you wish.

We saw people of all abilities tackling this hike which is why it grabbed the number one spot on our favorite hikes of 2023. Since it appears to be accessible to many, although as I mentioned it’s a pretty steep climb over a short distance.

2) Panorama Ridge

Panorama Ridge in British Columbia is an incredibly popular hike and for good reason! The views over Garibaldi Lake and the mountains and glaciers which surround it are out of this world. That’s why it comes in as number two on our favorite hikes of 2023.

The biggest reason it didn’t get to number one is because it is a huge day hike to complete. Lots of people end up just making it to Garibaldi Lake and turning around. You Need to be organized and hit the trail early to make it all the way to Panorama Ridge.

The last section of this hike is also more of a scramble, although the route is clearly marked, it is steep and loose in sections. This means it isn’t suitable for all abilities.

For those who want to split it up, consider booking a night at Garibaldi Lake and spending the night. Continue on to Panorama Ridge the following day!

3) Crypt Lake

Crypt Lake in Waterton Lakes National Park is a must do for anyone visiting the area looking for an excellent day hike. Most commonly accessed by boat since the trailhead is on the opposite side of the lake to the town, this is a full day adventure.

The hike steadily works its way upwards, gaining elevation. As you start to break treeline the views really start with some cool waterfalls to take in.

This trail is not for the faint of heart though. Making this one number three on our top five favorite hikes of 2023. There is a skinny ledge to navigate, a ladder and rock tunnel to squeeze through as well as a chain section over a step rock area to make it to the lake.

4) Stanley Glacier

Coming in at number four of our favorite hikes of 2023 is the Stanley Glacier hike, located in Banff National Park. This great half day hike is popular for good reason. The Parks Canada maintained trail stops at the beginning of the bowl giving views of the Stanley Glacier as well as looking back to the valley below.

For those who want more adventure there is a well beaten loop path which takes you higher and closer to the toe of the Glacier. It loops around to the bottom of the waterfall and you can walk under it to explore the cave behind.

Once you leave the maintained trail though it gets pretty steep with loose rocks making the going slow. Great views reward the adventurer but even just ending your day at the termination of the main trail is a worthwhile day hike.

5) Heart Mountain Horseshoe

The Heart Mountain Horseshoe is technically a scramble and is very steep in places but the variety or terrain and different views as you walk along the ridge make this our number five favorite hike of 2023.

From some hands on scrambling, to easy flat ridge walking, this trail has something for everyone. Plenty of open, flat spots can be found for breaks and snack stops. The views over barrier lake were some of my favorite of this hike.

This trail is a knee burner though on the way down. Poles were a must use to help keep my balance on loose sections while heading downwards. We also love that it’s a loop hike rather than an out and back.

Things You’ll Need To Complete These Hikes

A great pair of hiking boots will work wonders, I wore my La Sportiva Raptor 2 hiking boots on every single one of these hikes, they are lightweight, comfortable and perfect in almost any terrain. Well worth the investment as they are still in great condition ready for 2024 hikes.

Many of our five favorite hikes of 2023 involved hiking in steep or rough terrain, hiking poles are amazing for tackling these trails and saving your knees on steep downhills.

A great day pack is a worthwhile purchase, allowing you to carry your water, extra clothes, first aid kit and snacks. We find a backpack between 20 and 30 litres capacity is perfect for day hikes and a hip belt is a must for long days on the trail.
