If you are looking for a hike with incredible views in Waterton, you’ve got to consider the Bears Hump hike. This hike takes you to a hump on the side of Crandell Mountain, which is known to the local Blackfoot as Bear Mountain, hence the name Bears Hump.
Although it is a steep hike, the climb is aided by some excellent trail building which makes the Bears Hump hike in Waterton a little easier. This trail is popular year round but is often quite busy on a sunny day in summer. Parking is limited however it is just a short walk from the Townsite Campground or any of the hotels.
If you are heading to Waterton at any time of the year, completing the Bears Hump hike should be on your list of must do trails during your visit.

The Bears Hump Hike

Don’t let the shorter distance lull you into a false sense of ease. There is nothing easy about the Bears Hump hike, it might be on the shorter end but that is a lot of elevation to squeeze into a short distance. Straight from the parking lot you gain elevation, the beginning of the trail crosses a somewhat rocky section which isn’t unmanageable. After this the trail winds upwards.
The Bear Hump hike is a mix of trail, stairs and rocks as it winds upwards with a few switchbacks for good measure. There are a number of benches just off the trail which make great spots to stop and catch your breath while taking in the ever growing views.
Views are expansive since the Kenow fire came through the area, with most of the trees either no longer standing, the views are a great distraction from this otherwise steep and hot hike.
The only time the Bears Hump hike levels out, is at the top as it crests over a large rocky area. Follow signs, stay away from the edge and never throw rocks off the top of this gorgeous vantage point. Instead, find a spot to sit, enjoy the view and have a snack. But watch out for the chipmunks which are plentiful and out to steal any food left unattended.
This hike is popular year round for a good reason, the effort vs reward ratio is well in favour of reward with incredible views looking over the town of Waterton as well as Waterton Lake and towards the USA. A favourite for sunrise and sunset missions, this hike is great at any time of the day in my opinion.
When you are done marvelling at the view, it’s back down the way you came, take it slow and save your knees. If you time it right, pop across the road for afternoon tea at The Prince Of Wales hotel or head into town and grab an ice cream as a reward!
Where Is The Trailhead
The Bears Hump hike has a dedicated parking area at the trailhead which is right off Highway 5, opposite the turn off for the Prince Of Wales hotels.
Otherwise it is a short walk through town, or follow the lakeshore trail to Kilmorey Hotel and then follow the road out of town to the trailhead.
Things You Might Need For The Hike
When we did the Bears Hump hike I wore my Salomon X Ultra boots since they provide great traction and support for going up and down. You could also wear good trail runners to complete the trail if you wanted something a little more breathable.
It was hot when we completed the Bears Hump hike, there is little shade on the trail after the fire which swept through the valley a few years ago, you’ll want some sunscreen and a sunhat at the very least. I also always like to hike in a sun hoody on hot days.
Never head out on the trails without bear spray and make sure you know how to use it. We saw lots of bears and bear activity while we were there hiking.
Places To Stay Nearby
We camped at the Townsite Campground which is located right in town and a short walk from the Bears Hump hike. It is a large campground although can be susceptible to high winds coming off the lake which can prove problematic for tenters.
If you are looking for a spot with a few more comforts, there are plenty of hotels in town which range in price depending on your budget. The Crandell Mountain Lodge offers some of the most reasonably priced rooms in the park during the summer, while Waterton Glacier Suites have larger rooms and are open year round.
