If you are looking for a fun and easy way to spend half a day check out the Red Rock Canyon in Waterton. Since it was an overcast and rainy day when we woke on our first day in Waterton, we decided to grab some sandwiches and take the scenic drive up to the Red Rock Canyon in Waterton and add on the short hike to Blakiston Falls which starts in the same place!
A rainy day is a great day to visit Red Rock Canyon and Blakiston Falls since it is slightly less busy than a hot sunny day! On a warm day the canyon is packed with people cooling off and having fun in the water in the bottom of the canyon, when we visited, it was far too chilly to want to go in the water.

The Red Rock Canyon In Waterton
Distance: 0.7km loop
Elevation: minimal
The Red Rock Canyon in Waterton is an easy trail which goes in a loop around the edge of the canyon. The upper parking area provides easy access to the middle of the loop and from there you can go left or right to start the trail. There are three bridges, one at each end of the trail and one in the middle.
The path at the Red Rock Canyon in Waterton was recently upgraded and it is now almost completely paved, with fences in some places and one spot where they allow you to access the canyon, at your own risk. There are also a few interpretive signs on the trail detailing how the canyon was formed, as well as a few benches to sit and enjoy the view.
Blakiston Falls Hike
Distance: 2km return
Elevation: minimal
The Blakiston Falls hike is clearly signposted for the lower end of the Red Rock Canyon trail and can be accessed from here or a short walk from the lower parking lot. Cross the river using the bridge and head up through the forest. It’s a unique landscape since the forest fire, with the trees all burnt and then the ground covered in bright green plants flourishing in the new sunlight.
As it curves around the corner the first view of Blakiston Falls can be seen. There are two platforms which overhang the falls. This trail isn’t as accessible as the Red Rock Canyon trail, since there are steps to navigate to get the best views. The platforms hang over the waterfall and we had them almost all to ourselves on a grey and rainy day. There are benches too to sit and enjoy the view.
For those looking for a longer day the trail continues through the valley allowing access to the Waterton backcountry. Always check the trail conditions before heading out.
Where Is The Trailhead
Just getting to the parking lot for the Red Rock Canyon in Waterton and the Blakiston Falls hike is a beautiful trip, the road winds through a valley surrounded by towering mountains and gorgeous greenery.
From the townsite of Waterton, it’s just shy of a 20 kilometer drive, the turn off for the Red Rock Canyon is off of the main road into Waterton and clearly signposted so you can’t miss it. Once on the Red Rock Parkway, just follow the gorgeous road and stop at any pullouts to enjoy the views. There are also picnic spots to enjoy a nice lunch. The parking for the Red Rock Canyon in Waterton is the end of the road.
There are two parking areas, the most popular spot to park is the upper parking lot, however I prefer to park at the lower lot, as it allows super easy access to both the Blakiston Falls hike and the Red Rock Canyon.
Items You Might Need
To complete the Red Rock Canyon trail in Waterton you’ll want some reasonable shoes, I wore my On Running shoes and these were perfect, lightweight but grippy. Ideal for an easy hike and suitable to wear all day while exploring the park.
The mountain weather can change quickly, I’d recommend carrying a good rain jacket with you, so you can enjoy places regardless of the weather! I love my Patagonia rain jacket, it has stood the test of time and always keeps me dry.
Never leave home without bear spray, regardless of how popular the trail is, you should always carry it when out exploring the park.
Places To Stay
My favorite spot to stay while visiting Waterton National Park is the Townsite campground, centrally located and right next to the lake. This is a great spot for tents and RVs, with great washrooms and easy access to lots of trails.
If you are looking for a little more luxury the town has lots of hotels to choose from depending on budget. I’ve stayed at the Waterton Glacier Suites and they are just lovely, with different rooms to suit different groups.
Alternatively you can stay outside the park at Pincher Creek which is around a 45 minute drive away. Here you’ll find lower prices for accommodation with a lot of the big brands having hotels here. Check out the Econo Lodge which is very highly rated.
